Hey, Alex! Love the focus on social networking in education.

Ning now offers ad-free networks for 7 - 12th grade projects. See more at the http://education.ning.com site.

You might also be interested in Classroom 2.0 (www.classroom20.com) and this list of social networking in education networks: http://socialnetworksined.wikispaces.com/.

Cheers!

Dear Dr. Ruthmann,
I'm a junior at the University of Illinois, and I was at your lecture in the middle school methods class. I mentioned to you at the time that I was writing a paper on middle school technology, asked if I could e-mail you with some questions. I apologize for not following through with that, but I would like to thank you for your very entertaining and informative class. I will be able to use some of the ideas you have on this blog, however, so thank you very much for posting them (I particularly like the idea about commentaries over a piece. The process that students use when composing is very interesting). Again, thank you for your lecture at U of I, and for your great work in middle school technology!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Johnson

Thank you Alex for the links! Ning seems quite useful, again worth comparing to CMS/LMS tools such as WebCT/Blackboard. It seems quite easy to use compared to the commercial CMS's, still containing many of the needed properties. BUT schools should invest on the 20$ upgrade to avoid the ads: I received ads on getting a philippine bride and looking at pictures of goth girls!
